Artist’s Statement

In my art practice I work in two seemingly disparate fields: digital image-making, where I combine fragments of photographs into new compositions; and figurative sculpture, where I engage in the haptic process of shaping clay into representations of the human body.

My practice straddles the ever-narrowing divide between life in the digital arena and in the material world.

The figures I sculpt embody the impact of societal pressures, psychological stresses, and life events. They reveal the complicated nature of life – of hurt and love, sorrow and joy, power and vulnerability. I try to communicate this while celebrating the body with all its fleshy layers, an act of radical self-love in the face of relentless media directives to do otherwise.

I juxtapose these bodies with digital compositions where I search for a place of psychological comfort. – Ellen Scobie
