A forest of deep indigo blue allows bursts of sunlight through its thickly protective branches. This mixed media painting has a glossy gel surface applied in vertical bands. This enhanced texture brings to mind the small glimpses of sunlight that sparkle through gaps in a tree’s branches.
The water and rock formations of west coast terrain are digitally mined for texture. Waves wash over foreshore boulders into tidal pools. The rushing water refreshes, cleanses, and erodes in its rhythmic cycle of renewal.

The vibrant hues of red, orange and purple fill this composition with lush, energetic colour. I built up the surface of the artwork with multiple layers of transparent glazes and used a scraffitto technique to create enhance the vertical lines of the grass blades.

In my work, I capture the landscape photographically and reshape it for expressive purposes. Here I have endeavoured to interpret powerful emotion by evoking the grand compositional gestures and intense colour purity of 19th-century Romantic painters.

A sailboat lazily waits for wind on a summer day. Inspired by the many sailboats along the West Coast and Gulf Islands.

This landscape started from a photograph I took of a waterfall. Contrasting the icy fall of the water with the dark green forest textures alongside it, I continued to build the composition by creating rocky cliffs and adding details to suggest vegetation. The finished artwork has abundant textural detail poetically evoking the complexity of the forest ecosystem.

A lonely cabin dislodges from its hilltop perch and floats out to sea, the clouds buoying it along. Influenced by the artwork of Christopher Pratt and the detached melancholy of Edward Hopper’s compositions, the wide tranquil sea sets the mood for this artwork. The high horizon line emphasizes the volume of the sea and accentuates the drifting movement of the cabin, counterbalanced by the small, white sailboat in the foreground. A palette of still blues and greens recalls Japanese woodblock prints with their combination of flat colour and graduated tones in a carefully controlled composition.
